When your desktop shuts down, are you presented with a command line prompt? If so, what happens when you attempt to start up the desktop again, with the command "startx"?

I have not seen it shut down. I don't know if it is crashing or going thru normal shut down. I walk away to do something for a few minutes and the computer is off. Restarts like normal asking me if I want to restore my previous setion or start new.
