Fedora 7 machine browses the Internet on DHCP but fails completely on static address
 

Hi Guys,

I am struggling with what might be a minor problem. I have a home computer which I would like to setup as a webserver and hence give it a static IP address. It is connected to by wire to a router that is connected to the WAN via PPPOE. If I enable the network card on DHCP it works fine in browsing the web. If I now set it to static IP address it does not brown. Essentially I use the command setup to run the static IP setup.

I then set my IP address to 192.168.254.X , the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway to 192.168.254.1 (this is the router connected to the WAN). I am able to ping the router, however when I try and browse on static it does not work. Your help will be most appreciated as this has taken way too long to solve and I have Googled as much without success.

Can you ping past the router? Try to ping google. I have this setup, it works.

Try This is www.google.com. It responds to me.

Try the IP address first. If that works, try the www.google.com. It that fails, you have a DNS problem. It's possible the router is not giving your system DNS IP addresses.

If everything fails, what is the range of IP's your DHCP server is controlling? The static IP address should not be in the controlled range. Most routers you can control the number of IP's on DHCP ( in groups of four ) in the router config. I limited mine to just four IP's on DHCP. ( A security thing ) I never have more than four devices using DHCP. Just the laptops that come and go.

first fedora is not a good choice for a server
Fedora is a FAST research and development and TESTING distro
and as such an NEW version is released every 6 months and fedora only has 13 months of support and updates .

also fedora 7 is a few years DEAD and has not had a security update since it hit END OF LIFE back in June 2008 .

Also NO NEW software will ever be able to install on fedora 7 - seeing as it IS UNSUPPORTED .
i would install CentOS 5.5 on a server
cent has 5 years of support VS. fedoras 1 year

Thank you for the input. I will look at CentOS 5.5. Meanwhile I have done an IP address reservation for the web server as a solution and it is working fine.

simbini just remember that with fedora 7 there have been NO security fixes for the last two years

so your system is vulnerable to EVERY security bug/hole that has been fixed in the last two years

I had to download Fedora release 12. This is a stop gap measure whilst I look at CentOS 5.5. Open source servers are still new. Thanks for the advice.
