Fedora 4 + Can't connect to it at all (Apache + Samba)
 

I just installed Fedora 4 but I can't connect to it from any other boxes, or even to its webserver (Apache) from the web. I orginally was trying to connect from a WinXP Pro box to a network share through Samba, and even tho my Fedora box was showing up in Network Places or whatever it's called, I couldn't actually connect to it so I thought it was a Samba problem. Now tho when I try to connect to the Linux box's webserver it just times out. There is no firewall enabled on either through Windows or Linux but there is a firewall on my router. However I tried port-forwarding for port 80 to the Linux box and when that didn't work I even put it in a DMZ, still didn't work. I had this same box running properly using Fedora 3 (or 2 maybe, forget, it was a while ago) and Samba and Apache worked properly.
Oh yeah, I can also connect FROM the Linux box TO the Windows network shares fine, but not the other way around. And when I rick-click and go to properties of the Linux box in Network places it says the server does not accept incoming requests.
Pinging the machine from inside my network also times out....
Any ideas?

what if you use it's ip? 192.168.0.1xx(or whatever it is) can you access the box that way? Also, you said there were no firewalls. Did you disable them? I think FC installs a firewall by default, i may be wrong there though

Yes I am using my internal IP address (192.168.0.103) to try to access the linux box. When i installed fedora it asked me whether i wanted to enable the firewall, i chose to disable it. Also in the security settings in fedora it says taht the firewall is disabled (and everything is grayed-out)

It sounds like as far as file sharing you do not have samba set up correctly, I would go back and look at your settings.
When you start apache, you are unable to view the demo page from the MS box using the ip?

Apache is working properly, I can view files directly on my Linux box, using localhost, but I can't access the webserver (even when actually using the linux box) using its ip address. Like I said the Linux box is showing up in my network places in windows, but I just can't connect to it at all. It's not accepting any incoming connections. All the other times I've installed Linux it has worked properly right away with no screwing around with settings...

ok, so from any other computer, pinging times out, apache isn't serving pages, and the samba server does not accept incoming requests, it sounds like a firewall or ip tables are set up. Usually it's something pretty silly, but there is prob something there that you keep over looking. When you try to disable the firewall, are you doing this as admin? you said it was "greyed" out.

i'm doing it under system settings > security level (as root) and it says "security level: disable firewall" with all the other options grayed-out....if I turn the firewall on then i can select whether to allow http connections, ftp connections, ssh etc....
so as far as i know (unless there's another place, like you said iptables (tho i have no idea how to edit that) the firewall is turned off

turn the firewall on and allow http. go to the windows box and see if you can access the apache page

yeah now that i turn the firewall ON everything works fine.

Altho i would like to be able to turn the firewall off, just because I already have a hardware firewall on my router, and firewalls usually only lead to more hassles when I'm trying to use more things down the road...
