Fedora 4&5 - Disable DHCP request at startup

I am shocked that I came across no one else with this issue:

I simply dont want a dhcp request at startup! I have NO CABLE running to the NIC, so it just wastes time.
For Fedora's startup, regardless of CL or GUI runlevel, the system outputs "Determing IP information for eth0...". Either OK or FAIL. Mine hangs for a full minute and simply says "FAIL" when it SHOULD quickly say something along the lines of "no media present...check cable?"

I think the solution is in /etc/rc.d but I need direction.

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

As for the FC - it does (like any other Linux installation)
what it's told to do. If you didn't disable networking, and
didn't set a fixed IP if you haven't disabled networking, it
will go and try to get a DHCP lease, which is exactly what
Windows would be doing, too.

I'm not a Fedora-user (or fan, for that matter), but something
along the line of
chkconfig network disable
should solve the problem.

Cheers,
Tink

wow- i cant believe i didnt think of that. I cant disable networking because I need it for wifi, but assigning a static address solves the problem. Brilliant. thanks.
