I recently had a similar problem with SUSE 9.1. I could not hear any sound at all. I could download sound files without any problem and play them but I could not hear anything. after exploring my sound settings I found my solution for this problem, I can to realize that it was very simple, all I did was access the mixer window and by right clicking the sound system icon on the taskbar and then I unchecked the mute box for the pcm setting, and I also unchecked the lock option for the same thing. I could finally hear sound.
I hope this helps let me know if you need any more help,
thanks for your reply...in fact, this is what i had done ...
now another problem i am facing is with regard to the system getting stuck often. after 3 or 4 hours of working, the system gets work with no option but to switch off. In fact.my swap space is very less with 120 MB and 256 RAM. would this be a reason for this ?
thanking you
You are welcome, I have been given a lot of help by other linux users and I believe that as I get experience I should try to help others that have had my same problems because I know how big of a headache not knowing how to do something can be.
When you say system, do you mean the computer operating system or just the sound? If you are talking about the system having a small swap space can cause those problems especially if you have a dual boot computer. I am not an expert on computers but whenever I installed linux for the first time I changed the partition settings and when I would use the linux partition my computer would freeze. To solve the problem I used linux as my only operating system and used the whole harddrive for it too on my computer and that solved the problem. I think you should post your question on the software or hardware forum to get some more experienced help on your problem.
