fedora 23 crashing
I installed fedora 23 on my desktop, no real issues, everything seems to work out of the box(printer, usb sound card). Installed chrome for netflix and other video issues with firefox, and i'm getting lockups
installed cinnamon DE, when first crash happened, i was trying to swap the firefox icon for chrome. Deleted the firefox icon and couldn't figure out how to add the chrome one, so i clicked "reset to default" and my system crashed(this was while netflix was playing.
Second crash i loaded netflix back up and tried again. this time just dragging the chrome icon from the 'all apps' menu to the main side bar of the menu, and while doing so i accidently launched firefox and all hell broke loose.
couldn't cntl alt F into cmd, also tried cntrl alt esc and atl sys req and other things i read from a google search. no response so I had to hold my power button(both times)
when it came back up the second time my bios said all devices were returned to their default settting, which i've never seen before.
Is chrome/netflix working but not stable? or is something else maybe going on?
or is it maybe because i was testing with 'mortal kombat annihilation"? it is a pretty bad movie....

At this point it seems like anything launched while netflix is playing is causing a crash.
switched to gnome de on reboot and launched thunderbird while playing netflix like the last crash and it didn't happen. i'm gonna reinstall cinnamon

LOL, certainly always possible!
I'm presuming you're watching Netflix through Chrome... is that Chrome stable or beta? Also, are you using the standard X drivers, or have you installed any kind of proprietary X drivers for an AMD or Nvidia card?
Is there any potentially useful info in /var/log/messages when the crash/lockup occurs? Can you ping and/or ssh into this desktop from another computer on the network when this happens, or is it truly and completely locked up?
For what it's worth, I've been running F23 for a few days now and haven't encountered a single hiccup. However, I'm running the MATE spin, and I don't really watch Netflix or anything... very curious as to what the root cause of this might be, though.
Good luck!
strick

I'm assuming it's the stable version, i used the 64 bit .rpm from Google. I did not think to ssh in, but I'm not sure if that comes configured out of the box. I have a centos server set up for remote ssh, so I've been lazy about setting up port forwarding to the new machine.
I will check the logs when I get home, because when I reinstalled cinnamon the first time logging back in I did get a pop up that said chrome , but it dissapeared quickly

Iceman,
Nice detective work!
As you're using the opensource Nvidia (nouveau) driver, I'd try disabling its hardware acceleration features by inserting a kernel boot option as described here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Commo...ck_up_randomly
Did you ever have an earlier version of Fedora or another distro on this desktop prior to this F23 install? Just curious if it's something possibly related to the most recent version of the nouveau driver (1.0.12) included in F23...
Good luck,
strick
