Fedora 10 KDE Help Needed
 

hey.. first post and I am askin for help! hahaha

Anyway... nice to be on this site and hope to, one day, be able to help someone else out when it comes to Linux :)

OK.. my problem..

I have tried several Distros and found Kubuntu to be my favourite... HOWEVER someone recommend Fedora and after reading Feb2009 issue of Linux Format magazine I decided to give Fedora a shot. Unfortunately without much success.. when I tried to install Fedora 10 it installed GNOME rather than KDE... I was happy to see that it found all my hardware and installed without any problems tho! Even my bluetooth and wireless card were supported! So I was pleased at that.. but GNOME.. well.. reminds me of my old Commodore Amiga A600 Workbench days! haha I have a dual core CPU and 4GB of ram and a 512mb gfx card.. so I think it can handle some eye candy like KDE...

I then tried to reinstall but this time I checked through all the settings and disabled GNOME and selected KDE instead. Installation went well and then my system rebooted. I was then asked to setup an account.. input password etc.. I did that and then again my system rebooted.. then the problem.. the login screen.. the text was HUGE!!!!!!!! I mean 3 letters was all I could see on my screen!! I couldn't select the user profile to then type in the password.. so was stuck there.. can any one help!?!

I thought that perhaps if I installed Fedora as GNOME.. then used update to install KDE.. then perhaps that would over ride it.. is that the case? Or would I have to uninstall GNOME and replace it with KDE? Like I said.. I am new to Linux so please be kind :)

Lol, sorry to laugh but that was really HUGE! There was no need to reinstall, all you had to do is add the KDE desktop via your package manager. Then at the login screen there is a session option, select that then select KDE. The time it would take to resolve your current problem you could reinstall and be up and running again. Gnome does offer some eye candy, one that comes to mind is screenlets. I'm sure there are more, but I'm a KDE user, Gnome is not my area of expertise. :)

pmsl yeh I know!!! I saw the funny side when I first saw it.. but after a while.. well.. it was frustrating! haha

I intend to use Windows purely for Macromedia/Adobe Flash/Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop.. everything else would be using my Linus OS... but at the moment I am only using Windows because I still can't get this font thing fixed..

So if I had installed Fedora 10 and then entered the GNOME dekstop.. I could go into application manager.. add the KDE package.. then change the session to KDE instead of GNOME? Cheers I will look into that tonight :)

HOWEVER... I still think that if I did that the fonts would be insanely HUGE!!! And need to find a way to reduce the size of them... any ideas?

Yeh I have heard about GNOME eye candy... Compiz Fusion? the 3d cube thing.. *shrugs* looks really nice.. wouldn't mind having that running on a KDE Linux install :) But first things first eh? I need to be able to read my windows text! hahaha

It could be that when you removed Gnome, you left behind some files that conflicted with the KDE install. When you reinstall don't leave the /home intact, recreate all partitions.

Nah its not that... the video that I posted was of a clean install from the KDE cd version to a USB pen.... GNOME had been nowhere near it.. :/

You didn't mention that in your original post, so I assumed you had reinstalled to the same media. I'm interested to see if the same problem occurs if you install Gnome by default, then add the KDE desktop after. By the way I still have my Amiga A500 stowed away :D

The font size problem is certainly quite unique to your installation - I've never seen anything similar so far on Fedora or any other distribution. As already posted, re-installing just to switch to KDE was rather surprising and unneeded. It' usually a good idea to check out http://distrowatch.org about the default window manager of any Linux distribution. As you came to know, Fedora defaults to Gnome. Then again, nothing prevents you from using KDE application under Gnome, and vice versa.

My honest suggestion is that you should at this point not become very fixated on any Linux distribution, but rather try out LiveCD's, and then stick with one that works for you, at least until you get to know Linux good enough to not become confused with accidental problems, like this strange font issue. Then you can make a more educated choice for a distro.

umm... and a few others I forget.. its out of those that I came to prefer Kubuntu.. but thought I would have a go at Fedora, as I have heard Fedora is a better Distro, and OpenOffice 3.0 actually runs on it, unlike Kubuntu..

yeh I know u can probably get OO3 on Kubuntu but thats with a lot of messing about.. Fedora.. works straight "out the box"

I will install GNOME and then try switching to KDE and see what happens.. HOPEFULLY it will sort the problem.. if not.. then I will cry!! hahahaha Nah.. if it doesnt work then I will just revert to Kubuntu *shrugs*

Still got yer Amiga? Now I am jealous! Id give anything to have mine back!! I have an Amiga emulator tho.. so can still play the games! hehe I have Dosbox too.. great dos games!!! hehe

Please do. If it doesn't work and if you're willing, perhaps we can get to work on troubleshooting the problem. At the very least it will leave a solution for the next person who encounters the same issue.

I used to run UAE Amiga Emulator. Would like to again, but can't find my kickstart rom image anymore. :(

Kickstart ROM image eh? Yeh I have a few of them :) Not legal to send u it unless u own the original... but if u post a pic of u with yer Amiga.. then.. I guess that proves u have an Amiga and so could send u the image :)

With regards to installing GNOME and KDE and then switching.. same problem...

Not go there? So you prefer Kubuntu to Fedora then? Mandrive? Never tried that... what is the ease of use on that? I havent been using Linux long so that is why I started with the Distros I did.. nothing too complicated.. to give me a smooth transition into Linux rather than Windows.. then as I learn more I can move to other Distros that are "less user friendly" but more powerful.

The fuss with OO3? Well.. its quite simple really.. If an OS will not update an app to its latest version then in my eyes.. there is something wrong with it. Now I agree that just because it is the latest version that doesn't necessarily mean it is better!! Take Powerquest Partition Magic 8.0 for example.. I still use that!! The newer versions were padded with rubbish and were slow and.. well.. rubbish!! Version 8 works a treat and cost me next to nothing in a PC shop's 2nd hand bargain bin!

With regards to OO3.. well.. I would like to think any modern distro has the ability to update its software to the latest version with ease.. Fedora does it.. why can't Kubuntu? And I BELIEVE, not sure on this.. but I believe that Ubuntu has OO3 on it.. so what's the problem with Kubuntu? Surely thats just Ubuntu GNOME with KDE desktop? So why won't OO3 install on it? Just says to me there is an issue with the OS *shrugs*
