Fedora 1 problem
Ok I am obviusly a newb to this otherwise I wouldnt be posting here. I have everything working but my internet connection. I get a message saying
"Determining IP info for eth0.... failed; no link present. Check Cable? But my cable is connected it worked fine with win xp..... So I dont know... |
ok right, first things first. the way this works is you are quite verbose in your description of problem and then you get more info back out of us
how do you connect to the internet. ADSL,corperate network...? do you have a dhcp address? i'm guessing your connection will be through some kind of gateway/router rather that just an ethernet cable straight into the internet try pinging your router does this work? ping <ip of router> try setting a static ip ifconfig eth0 <ip you want> up route add default gw <ip of router hopefully most of this makes sense if you are on a home network then you should have a 192.168.1.X or 192.168.0.X address depending on your routers set up also what network card are you using. are you sure it actually works? loads of questions i know but read the guides on how to post good threads. FC1 problem is not a good title considering you have a network problem. something like "network card not working <network card name>" might have been better. theres loads of guides on this site. (read Tinksters sticky at the top of the newbie forum for more details on making good postings) good luck and let me know how it goes pat |
try fedora 4
|
Sorry for the lack of info.
I live in an apartment complex that supplies internet (for students). I use an ethernet cable that plugs in directly to the wall I do not have a router. Not sure what the apartment uses exactly. The connection worked perfectly when I had windows xp. I have a 3C920b-EMB integrated fast ethernet card. This is all the info I have at the moment... Thanks for anymore help... Also when I do the ifconfig command it says could not run specified command. |
Why FC1? not FC4?
|
yeah so try running ifconfig in a root shell
yeah good point. do try FC4 instead. talk to the people who maintain your network. ask for the DHCP server ip, the default gateway to use and what subnet you need once you've got that info i can let you know what commands you need to run pat |
