FC5 (64bit) Hangs on 865Chipset, P-IV 3.06GHz
 

Hi

Recently upgraded my system to P-IV 3.06Ghz with intel 865 Chipset w 80 GB IDE and installed FC5 64 Bit

During installation, everything was fine except it fails to reboot at end of installation process.

And after manual reboot it always Freezes at Login page (GUI).

I tried to install again but the same result occurs.

What can be the problem?

The answer is probably that the Intel Pentium 4 3.06Ghz 512kb cache Socket 478 FC-PGA2 with a front bus speed of 533Mhz doesn't have the 64 bits extentions.

Intel EM64T instructions must be available in the (Intel) processor to run a 64 bit version of Linux, processors without this extensions are just able to run the i386 (32 bits) releases.

I am a big AMD fan, but a quick google on "intel 3.06 Ghz 865 chipset" leads to many products, and I don't see any of them mentioning that it is a 64 bit processor. I am not going to bother to hunt down exactly what is in your processor, but if you try to run 64 bit programs on a 32 bit chip, it won't work. I'd actually be a little suprised if you could even install 64 bit OSes on a 32 bit chip, so it is quite possible that I am wrong.

The 64-bit exciting is a bit to much, the word 64 bit suggest it is truly 64 bit processor power, pity less is true the Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T ) is a feature of to Intel's computing architecture that enables the desktop processor platform to access larger amounts of memory.

So yes it is possible to use so-called 64 bits software on a 32-bits processor to some level, this give people sometimes the idea that it is working.

P.S. I belief that the 64 bit of AMD are also not truly 64 bits processor power it is just marketing from both sides (Intel and AMD)

The said Processor is Pinless and uses a 775 pin socket (775-land LGA package) with 1MB Cache memory and 533 MHz FSB. And box hv printed on it "Intel EM64T supporting 64-bit computing"

I think the processor hv 64 bit capablities. There may be some other reason behind the problem, because the installation process was completed without any error.


I also tried to install the SUSE 10.1 and after installation it halts by saying Kernel panic attempted to kill init.


The only sucessfull installation is Red Hat Enterprise Linux which i just installed.

Will try FEDORA later again.

I lost the way, Pentium 4 running 3.06Ghz, 1MB Cach, FSB 533 is never released by Intel with socket 775, maybe you can inform me the new Intel serie number? It must be a 5XX serie as I can remember that early versions had a 533 Mhz FSB or where that Celeron processors.

I live in Thailand, and hear that sometimes shops sell highly overclocked computers like it is standard processor. Therefore here the complete list of Intel Pentium 4 processors to check what you have....

The sticker on CPU box says

Intel Pentium 4 Processor 524+
Supporting Hyper Threading Technology
Intel EM64T supporting 64 bit computing.

And another sticker says (Which have Bar Code n info on it)

Pentium 4 Processor 524, LGA 775 Pkg.
3.06GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB
(Requires Platform Compatibility Guide 04A of 04B Board)


Above all I assembled it by myself :) with a ASROCK motherboard w Intel 865 Chipset MotherBoard. Which have pins on CPU Socket and the CPU is pinless.And in Bios, options are there which deals with Hypertheading etc. And the system summery confirms all the facts about P-IV e.g CPU Speed, Cache and HT enabled.

I visited the link specified by u surprisingly the series indicates 530 after 521 and no 524. :scratch:
