Hi all, I want to install FC4 on top of my current FC1 but without any of the major settings like Grub messing up. I have 2 HD (40GB-FC1 and 30GB-WinXP) my WinXP has like 15GB of info that got deleted, so that has to be rescued. So for the time being I am using FC1 for all my work but I really need to upgrade. Will installing FC4 affect my grub in anyway? I cannot afford anything being written on the WinXP drive untill I can get it resecued. Thanks
Upgrading a system from FC1 straight to FC4 is really too much of a jump. Remember that if your /home directory is on a separate partition then you can run a full installation and have the installer not reformat the partition.
You can also choose in the install process to not reformat the XP drive, and set the boot loader to have Windows as a second option.
If recovering the data is vital then I would probably unplug the drive and pack it away until that was done - software does exactly what the human tells it, even if the human makes a mistake
Lol yes well 15GB of data is veryyyy vital, but i wont go into details. Thing is that the Grub is on the Windows drive...i cannot remember the name but its mb something. But if i turn off the WinXP drive via BIOS it says operating system not found. So should I just turn it off, take it out or something, and just put in the FC4 cds to install? I dont have anything important on here.

Master Boot Record...every system has to have a tiny bit of software on a specific location on one of it's hard drives to boot. The BIOS goes to the MBR area, and the software in the MBR (GRUB) provides a boot menu where the user can pick an OS for the boot software to startup.
If the lost data matters I'd be inclined to avoid any opportunity for mistakes, and leave things alone until you don't have to worry about that problem.
You can keep your Fedora 1 system safe by getting security updates from the official Legacy project, so you don't have to upgrade it until you want to:
