FC2 upgrade to 2.6.8, no sound...

Okay, now...

I had sound working fine under the 2.6.5 kernel and FC2. Today I got the bright idea to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.8, and things have been very quiet ever since. So far I've tried the following:
  • Checked that everything was plugged in
  • Installed updated (?) alsa drivers
  • Attempted soundcard detection--the system "sees" my SoundBlaster card, but can't detect it
  • Made sure all sound volumes in Alsamixer were not muted or turned down
  • Read a bunch of forum posts, tried things like editing modules.conf
  • modprobe worked for ten minutes, then froze everything....

After all this, I still have no sound. When I try to log in as my regular user, Gnome hangs after login, and KDE complains:

Quote:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Permission denied)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
lspci and lsmod definitely see my sound card, I"ll post them here next.

Any suggestions you might have would be welcome...I''m a newbie who counts anything that doesn't crash my system as a success.

I don't know why it worked, or if it worked, but I ended up logging as root into KDE, running alsamixer from there, and setting things again through Kmix...now the sound works for most logins, except for my "usual user" login via Gnome. If I log in via KDE as root, or as a test user I just set up, everything's hunkydory; if I login as root or my test user in Gnome, sound works; but if I login as me via Gnome, FC2 hangs right after login.

dmesg gives me this:

Quote:
ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:00:13.0[A] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10
via82xx: Assuming DXS channels with 48k fixed sample rate.
Please try dxs_support=1 or dxs_support=4 option
and report if it works on your machine.
ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:00:11.5[C] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:11.5 to 64
ALSA /usr/share/alsa-driver-1.0.7rc1/alsa-kernel/pci/via82xx.c:585: codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000]
ALSA /usr/share/alsa-driver-1.0.7rc1/alsa-kernel/pci/via82xx.c:585: codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000]
ALSA /usr/share/alsa-driver-1.0.7rc1/alsa-kernel/pci/via82xx.c:585: codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000]
ALSA /usr/share/alsa-driver-1.0.7rc1/alsa-kernel/pci/via82xx.c:585: codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000]
And system logs say this:

Quote:
Oct 4 00:14:59 mylinux modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_2
Oct 4 00:14:59 mylinux modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_3
Oct 4 00:15:14 mylinux modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_2
Oct 4 00:15:14 mylinux modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_3
I don't mind switching over to KDE, but I sure would like to know why I have to...
