Hi there,

My name is Michelle. I have Fedora Core 2. I did a yum update from 2.6.5-1.358 to 2.6.10-1.771_FC2.

I cannot ping my router (on 2.6.10 version) or other computers on the network and connect to the net. I can ping my network card though.

If I choose the earlier verions (2.6.5-1.358) everything works fine.


This frustrates me. I have been into the network settings and changed the cable and the same thing happens.

I changed the cable and only once was I able to connect to the net using the 2.6.10 version.

Can someone please tell what the problem could be?

Hi, I have Fedora Core 2 v 2.6.10. I upgraded to FC2 v 2.10.7

I can't get onto the net in version 2.10. I can't ping my router or other pc's on the network. I can ping my network card though.

I thought maybe this is to do with my firewall. Here's what it says:
Chain FORWARD and OUTPUT are ACCEPT

Chain RH-Firewall-1-INPUT (2 references)

ACCEPT all - anywhere
ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere
ACCEPT icmp -- anywhere anywhere icmp any

ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere state RELATED, ESTABLISHED
REJECT all -- anywhere reject-with icmp-host-prohibited

Can someone please tell me if I need to change the REJECT line please? Will changing this, allow me to get on line and connect to my router?

You may delete the line, but it won't be used in the case of ping, because earlier there's a rule allowing all icmp (well, there's also 'accept all' rule).

Make sure RH-Firewall-1-INPUT is mentioned in INPUT. If it is, check IPs and routing table. Also, is the default policy (ACCEPT) everything you have in OUTPUT?

Thanks for your reply.

There is nothing in the OUTPUT for both versions of FC2 2.6.10 and 2.10.

I can get on the net with the earlier version.

It seems that when I update that I can't get on the net with any new version. I installed Fedora Core 5 on another computer and I couldn't connect to the net or my router with the newer version.

Also, Fedora 5 has picked up or is adding network cards. I'll leave this though and post it in another post.

Sorry Michelle, just trying to remember what I have to do when I loose stuff like that.

If you only have the one network card then if you do you should see the ip address that your system is running at, it should be in the same range as what your router is set to (e.g. if your router is set as, say, 10.0.0.1 and you set the system/network card - probably eth0, to 10.0.0.2) which should show up in the results for the ifconfig command.

Also, is it possible that the upgrade has changed some other network setting like your service is a static one and the system has managed to change that to DHCP when you did the upgrade?

Or maybe your setup had a manually set DNS ip address or two and the upgrade has dropped this ??

Sorry, can't be specific, don't like either redhat or their fedora offerings so I'm just "clutching at straws" for ideas that might point you in the right direction.

Thanks for that. Yes I think you are right. The upgrade has changed the settings somewhere in there. I did change a line to allow me to router, I put a 1 in, here's the line:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

My other pc has Fedora Core 5 and I upgraded that too and I have to keep activating the network card to allow me to get online.

I'm confused. Also, I'm doing a course and this should be straightforward to me but it isn't. So, I shall put this all down to practise.
