FC2 freezes after update, what should I uninstall?

I have been happily using FC2 going on a year now, and use yum to update at intervals ( I suppose I shouldn't, since things were working). I did a 'yum update', and gnome acted funny, wouldn't minimize windows, so I tried to log out; freeze. Reboot, and freeze on the grey x on black background ( but I can move the 'x' around with the mouse). Freeze in a similar way with previous kernels ( currently, 2.6.8-1.521 )

I can rescue myself to the 'chroot /mnt/sysimage', and look around, but I am not sure what to do next. dmesg, messages in /var/log don't seem to say much useful. 'init 3' hangs.

I can yum remove|install, but what?

Thanks!
