FC1 Kernel
Is the latest version of the kernel 2.6?
Will performing the yum updates update the kernel to 2.6 as well? Thank you. Brian |
I don't remember if FC1 had an official 2.6 kernel... I think that was one of the major changes in FC2.
Yes, "yum update" will update the kernel, too. It actually installs the new kernel package, so you also have the old packages. This way, you can fall-back on a previous kernel if the new one happens not to work on your system. If you download a kernel package and "rpm -U kernel_package.rpm", then it will remove any old kernels you had installed earlier. |
Thank you for the reply ranger_nemo.
I performed all the updates that were available via yum but when the system reboots it still shows 2.4. When I ran yum. I typed the following commands: $yum check-update and after that completed I ran $yum update Is there a separate package to download? Brian |
I should have been a little more clear with my '''Yes, "yum update" will update the kernel, too.'''... It will only update to the latest version available in the repositories you have listed in your /etc/yum.conf . If your repos don't have a 2.6 kernel, you'll have to find a repo that does, or download an RPM and install it manually, or download the source and compile your own kernel.
I don't know anybody who supplies a 2.6 kernel for FC1. You might try << www.FedoraNEWS.org >>... They might have an article about it. |
2.4.22-1.2188 is the latest stable kernel released for FC1...
Some people have got 1.6.5 working with some fiddeling... Personally, I'm waiting until FC2 gets more bugs ironed out and I'll upgrade the kernel at the same time... Tim |
