FC 4 kernel update weirdnes

Hey All,

Trying to download the right drivers for my PChdtv 3000 capture card. I just installed FC 4 and am running 2.6.11. PChdtv's website offers drivers for 2.6.12+ or 2.6.6-. Hmm I'm in between those two.

"Yum update" doesn't update the system because it returns "Error: Missing Dependency: kernel = 2.6.15-1.1833_FC4 is needed by package...."

Grrrr -- It seems as if I'm being prevented from updating my kernel because my kernel isn't up to date! (Quick game of "Catch 22" anyone?)

I've read about updating the kernel alone -- doesn't seem easy and I would like to avoid it.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Yes you are correct they offer drivers for vanilla 2.6.12 or better kernels from kernel.org and they offer drivers and such for vanilla kernels 2.6.6 or less. The thing you need to know is Fedora / Red Hat kernels are not vanilla kernels, they add backports from the vanilla upstrean kernels and make other tweaks to the kernel. In other words they are not 'one to one' compatible with the vanilla kernel source.

FYI: nothing is stopping you from installing the kernel update yourself, for example as root from the console or xterm session;

Thanks -- I never knew there were gaps in the vanilla kernel #s.

I managed to get yum working properly. Problem solved.

No gaps in the vanilla kernels, but the layout has changed a few times latest big change was to netfilters when the vanilla kernel 2.6.15 series was released.

Glad you got the problem fixed.
