Hi there,

Quote:
It tells me www.ibiblio.org: Hostname lookup failure
Is this with DSL
Did you try ping www.google.com
In all likelyhood your connection is not set up, or the dns resolution is not setup.

I do not want to confuse you, and certainly not stop you
from trying everything you can. But I am sorry I do not understand
what you are trying at the minute. By all means keep going because
this is the best way to learn

I left where we use DSL to try to find out why you have a fatal error with mandriva.
We assume your cds of Mandriva are not faulty
(saying that if you downloaded them with an ADSL connection it is not guarenteed,
and you will need to check the md5 checksums)
With DSL so far you could only go as far as the command line interface.
I gave you some commands (you might need to be root to execute them in
a terminal, to do so type sudo su)
These commands will tell us about the video card.
Currently, I assume your video card is causing the problem in mandriva, because you
can run dsl in text mode.
Let me clarify: I do not suggest you use DSL in the long term, it is just
a sanity check and way of testing what is wrong with the combination Mandriva / your PC.

Tell me how it goes...
If you are not bothered about trying other distros, see Vectorlinux 5.1

It makes sense
Something to do with you swapping the memory banks around?

I am a bit surprised it is checking the HD
(never stumbled on that while installing mandy, or never tried to)
Maybe it is checking and formating?
It does not matter (yet?) ;-)

Mepis would have been another good suggestion
(I do not have a copy yet but intend to try one of this day)

Tell us how it goes... am curiuous now
