Fatal error @ "fopen(stage1.c:383) failed: ) I/O error".
 

Upon my attempt to install Mandriva I get a nasty error after the "loading into memory" progress bar.
This is the feedback I get from the console:

(upto this point all is OK...)

* Found a Mandrakelinux CDROM, good news!
*total memory: 256Mbytes
*trying to load /sysroot/tmp/image/install/stage 2/mdkinst stage.2.bzZ as a ramdisk
*moun ting/dev/ram3 on /sysroot/tmp/stage2 as type ext2.
*fopen(stage1.c:383) failed: I/O error
*unsetting automatic




AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHH!!!!! and at this point F1 displays:

"Fatal error finishing installation"

with a box that says "OK"

Can anyone please help as I'm new to Linux but I whant to get this working. :confused:

My first guess is a faulty CD-ROM media.

Tried another cd and even another harddisk, no luck I'm sorry to say. I don't normally have trouble burning disks anyway so I would have been suprised if this was the reason.
I do have a VIA Mb however and they are notoriously buggy.

How current is that MoBo? Another thing to try whether the
hardware is linux-compatible is to try Knoppix - it's usually
very good with booting on all kinds of environments, and had
very good hard-ware detection.

It's a K7S5A from Elitegroup, not too new I know. I'll give Knoppix a go and see what happens.

No luck with Knoppix, I just get buff I/O errors on dev/hdc and read errors on the cd, strange as this system was previously running Win ME without a hitch. Just for the record I'm not trying a dual boot, just a clean linux install, any other ideas? :(

Doesn't seem to be a common problem, though. On google the only references
to that board using Linux and I/O problems had to do with USB devices. Maybe
it's just dying on you, or the ide-cable has come lose, started to corrode or
something silly like that?

Someone has even written a HOWTO on sound on that thing ages ago, you'd
think he'd have mentioned a major incompatibility.

I think your right, I suspect it could be the cd-drive itself, it's got noisy too. I'll come back to that machine at another time (and thanks for the help).
The text you refer to is probably the same one I read, it does mention a problem with Mandrake 8 (I/O errors) but this only happens on some motherboards (different revisions maybe), however that is an old distro now so probably not relevent. I noticed that the same install was failing at different points too, that makes me think hardware.
Anyway I decided to be brave and tried a dual boot install for Mandriva on my main Windoze machine, woohoo it works! :)
Just one thing that puzzles me. I tested this machine (a 3000XP on a KT600 chipset) with a Knoppix live cd, with knoppix I booted to KDE with all my partitions available. In Mandriva only the Linux partitions are available. I guess I need to do something more.
