Failure to complete installation of 10.40.1
 

On my last post, I described my inability to get rid of a phantom ubuntu item in the boot menu. That was solved by EasyBCD.

Please read the situation below and advise me how to install 10.40.1

After trying to instal 10.40 as a "guest" of Windows7 in its own partition on drive D I got all the way thru then re-booted to finish the install as requested. At that point after reboot I selected Ubuntu from the boot menu then it hung up after quickly displaying and overwriting some option numbers - probably for GRUB

I uninstalled 10.40 then tried Ubuntu 9.4. It worked better and gave me an option menu after the install reboot. If I chose "normal" it also hung up.
I was succesful by chosing one of the other GRUB choices that it gave me.
Now everything works but with an older version.

First of all, it's 10.04 (as in "201004"), **not** 10.40. The release number corresponds to the year (10) and the month (04) that the version was released.

Secondly, the Ubuntu community was thinking of removing Wubi (the Windows Ubuntu Installer) from 10.04, as it was causing plenty of problems.

My advice: Try the 10.10 beta, boot from the CD, start Ubiquity (the Live CD installer), and when you get to the disk partitioning stage, select "Install side by side, choosing between them each startup". The one thing about 10.10 is that it has a very user-friendly partitioner that essentially looks very much Mac OS X's Boot Camp Assistant: It has a slider that allows you to allocate the disk space with one click and swipe of the mouse. Wubi is by far the most buggy way to install Ubuntu there is.

I did a similar thing to the suggestion of installing the beta first. However, since I had an old 9.04 version, I used that instead of the beta and went into the ubdater. Works OK now.
