Failed Ubuntu restricted extras download caused dpkg problem
 

I've recently upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10. When I attempted to add "Ubuntu restricted extras" the download failed.

I'm now prompted to run "dpkg --configure -a" when ever a package manager is run.

When I "sudo dpkg --configure -a" I get the following:

Setting up flashplugin-nonfree (10.0.22.87ubuntu1~intrepid1) ...
Downloading...
--2009-04-24 21:45:55-- http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get...0_linux.tar.gz
Resolving fpdownload.macromedia.com...

There is no further action but a blinking cursor.

I'm at a complete loss and would appreciate any help in resolving this problem.

That glitched with me before... had me pulling my hair out.

Reboot your machine, then try installing again from the package manager (Applications->Add/Remove...). That should download the missing/broken packages and complete the installation.

I did try to add it again after a reboot but the package manager now report it as installed. If I try to remove it so that I can reinstall I get the following message:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
If I run the command I'm back at my original post.

Hmmm... 8.10 must be a bit more quirky than 8.04....

Try this:

I tried "sudo apt-get reinstall ubuntu-restricted-extras" but apt-get does not like the reinstall command.

E: Invalid operation reinstall

I also tried "sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-restricted-extras" but then it is the package name that is the problem.

It seems that on your first post you hinted on a solution all along.

Since the problem raised it's ugly head about a week after a upgrade, all my backups are still fresh. I decided to do a re-installation. "Sometimes reinstalling is the easiest solution." - unknown, this is a quote from all your posts including the first one.

After the re-installation I successfully installed ubuntu-restricted-extras and other needed software.

I'm still curios as to how to fix this, if just for academic purposes. But I need my laptop for work, and needed to install other software using the out of action package manager. I do realize that I just used a sledgehammer to kill the gnat but time was not on my side.

Still, thanks to you for your assistance it is appreciated.
