failed to fetch

Why do I receive messages that have the phrase "fail to fetch" when I try to update Ubuntu 11.04?
I am using System, Administration, Update Manager and I have not modified the file /etc/apt/sources.list; nevertheless, I have copied it below together with an example message:

dennis@ubuntu:~$ cd /etc/apt
dennis@ubuntu:/etc/apt$ cat sources.list
#deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.04 _Natty Narwhal_ - Release i386 (20110427.1)]/ natty main restricted

How are you trying to update Ubuntu? It might help more if you can explain what you're doing, along with exactly what you're typing (if anything) and the full error message.

Using an apt based distribution like Ubuntu or Debian the error "failed to fetch" when updating normally means one of the repositories or files you're trying to fetch doesn't exists. It could be a miss-configured sources list, or a repository that temporarily unavailable.

Post the steps you're following, the error message you get, and on this occasion the content of /etc/apt/sources.list.

Please always refresh the 'Package Index' before an install or package update :

sudo apt-get update
