F12 ability

I was talking to someone a while back, he had his Linux terminal come up when he hit f12. I asked him how he did it, then we got on a different topic. Now I would love to be able to do that. From windows, hit f12 and be able to use Linux terminal. I have kali installed through virtual box and I am running win 8.1

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your question but wouldn't this one be more appropriate in a Windows forum? I'm not sure what a windows terminal has to do with linux. Maybe it's a windows shortcut to switch to a virtual machine?
