extremely new linux user
 

ok, so i am having some difficulties. first one is i have an old hp laptop that cannot boot from cd to install any files. it has to boot from a floppy. second is i'm not sure what version of linux i should install or where to download from. third is once i've downloaded everything i need how do i make a boot disk and how do i burn the files to cd. once i've got all that under control what would be the steps to installing from there?

i'm looking for an easy to use version of linux with a nice graphical interface. if they even exsist, i'm not sure. all i know is that everyone at my work said to get linux, but when i ran into problems trying to install it because of the boot up thing they told me to come here. the computer i am installing it on does not currently have an o/s installed on it. the hard drive was recently formatted.

Alot depends on how much memory the laptop has - I've got an old Pentium I Compaq w/ 96MB RAM, and I run Slackware on it without too much trouble (FireFox is slow, but that's about the only issue I have)

A long time ago I installed a Slackware distribution using floppies - you may want to take a look: http://www.slackware.org/install/ Pay particular attention to parts 2 and 3. The install/setup programs aren't graphical, but they're pretty easy to follow.

this (here or here) should get you started. Try looking at all of these if that does not suit your taste (here).

If you know nothing about linux then that could keep your hands full for a while.
