Extreme help---extreme newbie at linux
 

OK, so heres the deal. I downloaded im assuming a linux software called WORKBOOTH FOR MY WORK AT HOME JOB. I get the the main screen where i have the option to get to the bios menu from pressing f2. I LET IT LOAD....AND BOOM. I GET A ERROR MESSAGE

Mount: Mounting dev/sda1 on CDROM FAILED NO SUCH DEVICE EXIST
Mount: Mounting dev/sda2 on CDROM FAILED NO SUCH DEVICE EXIST
Mount: Mounting dev/sda3 on CDROM FAILED NO SUCH DEVICE EXIST

IM BOOTING FROM MY USB FLASH DRIVE AND I REALLY NEED TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AND HOW TO FIX IT STEP BY STEP.

I ALSO GET THE MESSAGE

Init/ line 7 cant open SR0
WHATEVER THE HELL THAT ALSO MEANS

PLEASE HELP ME, IM DESPERATE. IM A WINDOWS EXPERT, BUT THE LINUX THING IS BUGGING ME OUT. THANKS ANYONE

Yelling at people, especially in your first post, isn't going to endear you to anybody.
Perhaps you should contact the workbooth support people - see their website.

I don't see anything on their site indicting it is Linux software and the download has an .exe extension making it windows only. What part of the steps are you having problems with?

I apologize. I wasn't yelling. Lol just the part I pointed out. It begins to load then I get an error message stating what I listed above. Then some other things load really quickly and then a blank screen. I'm not sure it's windows, it has a isolinux component attached to the download files idk I'm stumped. I don even know what questions to search for

The burn utility is exe but the actually files that are getting burned to the flash drive seem to be Linux. I could be wrong, but I do see a filed that says Linux

It seems like the software assumes it is booting and running off a cdrom. I'd check their site for alternate install methods, or burn the image to cdrom and run it that way.

The devices do look like linux devices. /dev/sr0 would be the first cdrom/dvd drive.

I've burned a cd and Ive gotten the same message

I've searched possibly setting up mounting manually. I don't even know what dev/ sda1 is or why it's looking for those devices to mount.

Im trying to run a linux software on my windows 7. I downloaded the software onto a cd and it runs to the main page but when it continues to boot It keeps giving me the error message

Mounting: Mount on dev/sda1 on /cdrom faile: No such device\

then it continues to give me the message

Generation complete
blah blah
and I always end up at a blank screen. Is this due to the mounting?

How do I manually Mount this device SDA1;SDA2:SDA3 on the CDROM?

What exactly does this mean? What is the name of the "Linux software" you are trying to run? Where did you get it; is it something you downloaded?

We need to know specifics so we can help.

its called WORKBOOTH. I downloaded it off there website and onto both a usb and a cdrom and both times it gave me the error message

I know its a linux software because it contains files that say

ISOLINUX

I dont know if I need a linux OPERATING SYSTEM to run this program. I've booted the cd by changing the BIOS settings to boot from cd and it loads, I can see the main page for the program. WORKBOOTH 3.3, but i always end up getting the message above and then hitting a dead end blank screen and nothing ends up happening.
Ive even tried calling their it over, and all they keep telling me is to download a new cd. I now have over 5 cds with the same program on the them, they all load, but wont go past that mounting stage.

another thing, I have a laptop which is no longer in use because the hard disk got damaged, but it does turn on and can boot from external sources. I booted the cd from that laptop and everything was OK. Only thing is, I can use that laptop, because the job requires a specific screen resolution size and my laptops is too small. beats me why it would boot from my laptop and not my desktop.

No you don't. The software runs off the CD or USB.


I don't know anything about this software or what it is used for. The isolinux files are for the bootloader used to boot CD's and is commonly used with Linux.

Does that mean you got past the error above or did not get that error on your laptop and were able to at least start using the software?
If that's the case, it may be a bad hard drive or loose connections to the drive on the computer. Can you connect a monitor to your laptop.

Yes, it is definately some sort of linux. Isolinux is a boot loader

/dev/sda1,2,3 are partitions on your primary hard drive
/dev/sr0 is your cdrom

you shouldn't need anything other than the hardware requirements to run this. This appears to be a proprietary Linux designed to run from the cdrom/usb drive.

It would appear that this software is trying to mount your computers hard drive to a directory within the file system which isn't all that unusual.
What "is" unusual is that it doesn't seem to be finding your hard drive. It's also a bit unusual that it doesn't continue booting regardless.

How old is your computer?
Did the instructions you have followed so far ask you to change anything in the bios related to your hard drive so far?

Yes, On the laptop I was able to get pass the error message and boot the cd appropriately without ANY ISSUES. Does this mean that the laptop may have a bad hard drive or loose connections, cause you would be correct. There is something wrong with the laptops hard drive but its still able to boot up other operating systems externally. It booted and started as it should and I was able to use the software on the laptop. Only thing is, I cant use the laptop for work because of the resolution size. You suggested connecting a monitor to my laptop, can I connect my desktop monitor to my laptop, and if so, how would I do this?

I forgot to mention that once I get these error messages to mount the devices, it does continue to boot, but i end up at a blank screen. I tried leaving it for several minutes, but it continues to stay on that screen. Booting it up from my laptop with the bad hard drive does the same thing as far as the blank screen, but it eventually continues after a couple of minutes and I can get to the software successfully. The only thing I was instructed to do as far as the bios is to switch the priority to boot from CDROM or USB flash drive which Ive done in order to boot up the software. The website states that Workbooth is an operating system....does that also mean linux? what is linux by the way?
