external modem

Good morning,
I have an external modem connected to Ubuntu 7.04. I have configured all my settings, but on entering sudo wvdial I get the message that the modem wasn't detected.Could you go through the process of setting up my modem for me so I can see what I have missed or wasn't aware of.The port being used is ttys1, maybe I need to change this to ttys0, if so how please.. I hope you can be of some help. The modem is a dynalink 1456 VQE external V.90. Is there a alternate way instead of wvdial?
Many Thanks
Eddie Parker

Not really familiar with external modems. One thing that strikes me is the lowercaps as in ttys1. Serial ports are ttyS0, ttyS1. Typo or the real cause?

ttyS0 is the first serial port (in Windows/DOS COM1), ttyS1 is the second one (in Windows/DOS COM2); so it depends to which com port your modem is connected.

And that's about all help that I can give you, sorry.
