external hard drive and dual boot

I have a few questions wrapped into one issue here. First, I have a gateway laptop running winxp and I want to be able to dual boot with mandrake 9.0. However, my hard drive space is tiny (20 gb with only 10 available). So by the time I partition for both os's, I'm left with very little free space.

My questions are these: if I dual boot with mandrake and windows, can I use a usb external hard drive with both os's? If so, will I need to partition the external as well? Finally, if this is possible, what would some of you recommend as a good external hard drive? I've been looking at western digital but it says it's only compatible with windows. Thanks in advance for the help.

During the Mandrake Installation, your hard drive will be partitioned (either by you or by using Mandrake's autopartioner (can't remember what it's called)). Maxtor Hard Drives are awsome and work great with Linux. I don't know about using a USB External Hard Drive. If it were me, I'd just use an Internal IDE Hard Drive.

As you can probably tell, I'm very new to this. If I get a new internal hard drive, will it fit into my laptop? My gateway laptop has a hard drive that is something like 2.5". Will the new hard drive I buy slide into the position on the laptop that the old one is in now? What do I need to look for? Sorry if these are ridiculous questions to the pro's here.
