External Hard Drive

Hello all, very new to the whole linux experience. Currently using Fedora Core 2 and would like to grab some music off an external hard drive that I have. I connected it to the machine via USB. It does not seem to recognize the drive. Can anyone help me with what I am doing wrong..Thanks

Welcome to LQ!

what filesystem is the external drive formatted? if it is NTFS, FC2 did not, if i recall correctly, have even read support for NTFS natively. If it is a filesystem that FC2 can read natively, such as FAT32/vfat then we can start by looking at the end of dmesg shortly after you connect the drive and give it a bit of time to spin-up and settle. As well, checking the output of mount from a shell or terminal to see if it did indeed mount it automatically. Also, review the output of fdisk -l to see if the drive is at least detected at a block-device level.

you can paste the results of the bolded commands above between code tags for us to review.

Code:

paste output here so it is formatted nicely for review
[ /code ]

It is formatted in NTFS, I did google ntfs support for FC2 and found nothing, would I be wise just to upgrade to a newer version of fc?

If you can, I recommend it. Fedora 10 has support for reading NTFS and I have used it several times over the past couple of weeks. Fedora 11 is due to release in 10 days. There have been many many improvements between FC2 and F10.
