"extension "GLX missing on display " :1.0

Hi,

I'm new to linux(sortof) I've been tinkering with it fora few years off and on.

I was looking at this site under linux for the problem I am having. But forgot the address of the thread I was looking at. I decided to register, But, I had to go to, I'm going to use cuss words here) Microsoft Windows for my e-mail. I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04.

The message is "extension "GLX" missing on display ":1.0
I am using nvidia card.
I was going through this post I had found that was suggested to another to check "xorg.conf". I looked at my files and only found two backup files with about 10 lines each. I.ve restarted linux and chose reconfigure with no success. How do I get this file to reconfigure?
Linux was working fine until the lightning strike. That's when this happened.

And why does it say my cd-rom is mounted, But, synaptic manager under "add cdrom" give the message "E:error cd-rom not mounting"

Hi, Welcome to LQ!

LQ has a fantastic search function that may save you time waiting for an answer to a popular question.

With over 4 million posts to search it's possible the answer has been given.
lightning can and may do all sorts of damage to you electronics.

First thing I would try is to reinstall the opengl libs.

It's possible your cdrom is damaged, but hard to say right now.

xf86config was the old command to setup the display, but your OS may have a different application to do so.

Hope this helps, Glenn

It's very strange that you would be using display :1.0 unless you had Xephyr or two Xorg servers going.

Are you saying that /etc/X11/xorg.conf doesn't exist? If it is missing, then you are not using the proprietary drivers from nvidia, which would possibly explain the GLX error. Please show us your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

I assume Ubuntu now drops you in a command line mode. If so, try reinstalling nvidia-glx package which should also repair altered configuration files. If you have an internet connection, issue command: sudo aptitude reinstall nvidia-glx. Then reboot with command: sudo reboot.

There is nothing wrong with that Xorg log file, though it does show you are using /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which you previously said doesn't exist. I am still unsure of why glxinfo says you are running on display :1.0. Can you show us the output of 'ps ax' ?

Also, please use

tags around blocks of code, content of files, or even just the output of commands.

Sorry again for taking so long. You don't need to help me with this problem. My computer did a "crash and burn". I don't know what happened except a blue screen came up with "boot cleaner in progress". It appears to have wiped out everything. The computer will not even boot from the cd drives. So we shall start fresh with this new Dell with Windows 7. Well, I'll load Linux and give it another shot. What are your opinions on Wubi. Thanks for trying to help.
