Question

Okay, change of plan. Since my celeron pc won't boot slackware from flashdrive, I'm thinking of just using this P4 PC, which has plenty of ram, for my Linux, & transferring all my Windows, html and programming work from here to my 2 celeron setups. Or will the 256 Megs of ram present too much of a bottleneck for xp? More recommendations?

I wouldn't want to work on xp with 256. If I had a choice I wouldn't want to do it with Slackware either if I planned on using X. Maybe split the memory up? Celerons and P4's have a good chance of using the same memory.

Exactly how much is "plenty of RAM"?

I agree with damgar-- I've worked on XP machines with 256Mb, and what a kludge! Windows is more swap-centric- swapping all it can to "save resources", while Linux is more RAM-based, swapping only when necessary. If you can mix and match RAM cards to balance out to at least 512Mb for XP, that would be your best bet. And yes, RAM will interchange between Pentiums and Celerons, as long as they have the same pin configuration.

Cheers
