Exiting X-Windows for TTY1 Prompt

I'm wanting to upgrade XFree86 to the latest version, but can not get to the Linux base prompt and completely out of XWindows.
How can I drop out of the GUI and just work with the command line?

Thanks

CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE simply takes me back to the login screen.

well...... ctrl alt f1 doesn't close the xserver it only switches back to the original tty1 login screen. to completely exit the xserver you'll need to do ctrl+alt+backspace (that is if you do not have a XDM running)
