exiting a man page???
 

OK so I'm not in X and i've opened a man page by using man [whatever] but how do I exit the man page to get back to the promp so I can continue on. I'm tried ESC, CTRL + C, the only thing that didn't give me a beep was CTRL + ALT + DEL which restarts the system.

Is it just me or is this horribly designed? Isn't the escape button the logical button to get out of any window back to your normal prompt? and isn't CTRL + C used to terminate an app you're working in? Why aren't these standard methods used and why isn't here something saying Press this key to exit?

Moebius, I was feeling exactly like you when I started with linux, but when I read this thread, it looked funny to me. But I think you are a little over-reacting (-- OMG - he restarts the system to get out of man.......)

Don't think that I am sledging you, but I am just posting what came to my mind, and so no hard feelings.

UltimateGuy, I know I feel exactly the same, restarting the system to get out of man is ridicules, but I couldn't find any other way. I would never think to press q. I've been using Windows for years and years so I've been hardwired to press ESC to get out of a program like that and it still seems like the most logical button for this purpose. I've said it before and I'll say it agian, these little quirks are examples of how linux has a long way to go before an average user will be able to figure it out.

It's amazing.... try 'man man' to see the man page for the man command.... i just skimmed through it, and it doesn't mention 'q' for quit.... LOL....

i remember my first time using man, 'q' seems to be rather intuitive.... too much windows brainwashing is never good, but Moebius is right, in that user friendliness needs to improve a LOT before linux can really become mainstream.
