execve failed for /etc/x11/x

i am unable to start my redhat linux in graphics mode. i am getting # promt
and if i type startx i am getting an execve error..............

A search on google for "redhat startx execve error" provides a few different solutions. Can say some of the steps you have tried to solve the problem?
