Question Execution Speed Comparison

I have tried several distros to see if one struck my fancy over the others. One thing I have noticed is that Fedora 2 & 3 and Mandrake 10.1 Community seem very slow to respond to inputs. The same machine running CollegeLinux and Linspire 4.5 is quite nimble. With Fedora and Mandrake it seems to just crawl along. Could someone give me a hint of what I may be doing in setting up this machine that would cause such sluggishness. I'd really like to use Fedora 3 but need at least a bit of performance.

Maybe you're having too many things compiled into your FC kernel. Try recompiling and exclude some things.
