Smile Excessive CPU Usage

Sorry for being such a pain but I need help!!Every time I startFedora on my comp which is a toshiba satellite P III with a dual bootwith Windows XP in one partition my CPU usage jumps to 100% and remains there for a very long time. Does it indicate that theres something wrong with Linux or I can sleep over it.
And thanks for suggesting a solution to my query on start up problem, I will definetely give it a try CTL F 1 but you know that I am still preety greem behind the ears so I would be really grateful if you really spell out the details step by step.
PS: Just to recapitulate on startup after all the data checks instead of the usual User Name page I get a blue screen with the pointer arrow alone. Here I have no choice but to switch off my comp and statr off again.

Couple of things here. First whats you laptopn config I mean CPU n mem . Generally when x loads on bootup it takes lot of system resource and if u have lot of startup apps it will remain high for some time.

You can monitor it a bit using below method :

1. Boot in runlevel 3. Login as root now and run top on a console.
2. Change the runlevel to 5 using "init 5", and now monitor the result of top and see which system process is using high mem or cpu.

I have been observing the problem for the last few days and as soon as the drop down box for download updates comes on the CPU usage drops to low levels for Quite some time only to go back to its old 100% level after some time. On checking the system monitor it is usually YUM Updatesd which is the culprit. What should I do.
