Sounds like you're seeing only part of the screen of the program involved.
Try this: hold down yje "alt" key and depress the left mouse button in a part of the screen that is blank (so you won't be activating anything within that program. With the alt key pressed, you should see that the mouse cursor becomes like a little hand. using that little hand just drag the whole thing down and to the left until you can see the control squares in the upper right corner.
If that works so far, then "unmaximize" that window, and use your mouse to drag the edges of the program toward the middle, to make that screen small enough to fit on your monitor.
Then you will need to investigate why it got to be that way in the first place. A good guess might be that your screen is set to a low resolution (say 640x480, or 800x600).
