I am new to this linux and before you moan I have searched the threads and it has confuzzled me even more.

Rite, I thought it would be simple to install the fast 800 under linux, how wrong I was. I am using slackware 9.1 kernel 2.4.22 kewl. Brilliant and nice and fast.

MODEM doh. I got the drivers from Sagem and installed according to instructions, setup VCI etc etc all fine. The only thing was that some of the files where you have to enter your user name and passwords were not there so gedit created them. Not sure if it was right to do that but hey. I installed the PPPOA part of the drivers also all according to the instructions.

Plugged modem in and there is power light but no adsl light. ifconfig -a shows the modem there. Once I have run ADI_PPP_Go te modem appears to be there but no adsl light and no connections etc.

I have no clue what to do. I cant even compile the drivers under lycoris. I have heard about the eagle drivers for this, gather that they are for the chipset of the modem. I dont know how to compile this eagle driver let alone use it and the .rpm packages are all for mandrake so plllleeeeaaasseeee help.

I am desperate to break away from windows, this is my 3rd try. It is always the connection to the net that stops me last time it was a connexant winmodem that was my downfall. Please help

BTW I am using tiscali (uk) 150k broadband service. Please people none of this get a router with ethernet cus if I could believe me I would.

this isnt really going to help u sorry have been trying to get the sagem fast800 working (also am with tiscali) for weeks on end (refuse to be beaten lol) have phoned tiscali (no support for linux) have e-mailed sagem (hence they have posted a new driver compatible! with rh9) and also e-mailed redhat re this problem.
Apparently there is a `memory leak` with the driver???? (wotever that means I don`t know)
my prob seems to be that I don`t have the adiusbadsl.o driver binary installed in
/lib/modules/2.4.20-31.9/kernel/drivers/usb u can maybe check out if u have the same prob.
the driver binary is supposed to install there when u run ./Install_All

I too have the Adi recognised in ifcongig -a

but when run PPP_ADI_Go ....have error messages.....have installed and uninstalled many versions of the eagle.tar files to no avail

It would seem to me that there script for driver compilation (if that is the right terminology) is lacking !
they profess to give u the `run through` with mandrake (who have the eagle drivers installed) and also SUSE but are very lacking in Redhat.

All I can offer is goodluck mate and if u succeed the there will be a million hits to ur `sagem fast800 success story` from all over europe

Memory leak is just where the code refuses to let go of memory resulting in the computer not letting go of the allocated memory. Thats as I understand it anyway

I am totally stuck !!!

I think I will give the eagle drivers a whirl as they state they have support for mosrt distros including slackware. Hmmmm compiling and istalling those.

HI! It is sorted!!!!!!

The eagle driver was just too much trouble!! It kept moaning about pppd, which by the way I do have installed. Right here is what to do lol.

First check on the bottom of the modem lol I found mine was the 800E2T which is not the same as the 800 apparently. Well the 800 firmwire driver doesnt work anyway with the 800 E2T. Soooo the solution is simple unpack all of the driver .tgzs and in there u will find some files that are rtbldep(x).bnm replace all of those with the ones from the tiscali cd. Or whatever windows driver you have that works properly. make sure you remake the tgzs as for some reason you cannot just edit them ?

Then run the setup as described in this http://www.sagem.com/web-modems/down...u_linux_en.txt

And the sagem linux driver is here, but remember to replace the bnm files hehe http://www.sagem.com/web-modems/down...0.2.0.7_fr.tgz

I did notice some of the files you are told to edit for pppoa were not made so I simply made them and added the lines and voila it worked.

well i was just looking for some help on this matter so im going to try your method Gazza. I run Slackware 9.1 (2.6.5) and also use tiscali (256k) so i am being very optimistic.... the only thing is i didnt ever have a working windows driver because i used OSX. but either way i will use a windows driver for those bnm files... and hope for the best thnx

well in theory it might work if i haven't lost my tiscali disc >_< better start searching lol

Ok, i cant find the tiscali cd so Gazza if you could, can you zip the .bnm files and upload them somewhere so i can get them downloaded. If you need a place to upload to a can create a temporary ftp for you? thanks in advance

I also have a Sagem fast800 E2T on a freshly installed Slackware 9.1 machine with the supplied kernel 2.4.22.

The ISP is Tiscali UK Broadband and I'm intending to use the Linux box for a server between the internet and a home LAN with a couple of Window$ machines also on the LAN.
I can ping the other machines by their IP addresses nicely, and talk to them through the LAN, but I can't seem to get the modem to work on the Linux box mentioned above.

To set the drivers up I did the following:

Get the Tiscali CD and copy the BNM files from them
Rebuild the Sagem tarball (from the earlier link) with the new BNM files
cd ADI_DRIVERS
./Install_All
Make the Sagem drivers
cd ../ADI_PPPOA
./PPP_INSTALL
and the PPPoA drivers.

Edited each relevant configuration file and stuffed the correct settings into it
jed /etc/analog/adiusbadsl.conf <-- VCI=0 VPI=38
jed /etc/ppp/options <-- login name
jed /etc/ppp/pap-secrets -- login + password

Rebooted with the modem UNPLUGGED,
waited for my system login: prompt and plugged it in again.

The PWR lights up at first and later the ADSL light comes on.

I log in as Root and go ADI_PPP_Go.
Also on another terminal -- # tail -f /var/log/messages &

Pinging valid IP addresses outside my network setup do not work, and ifconfig reports ADIModem to be there but not ppp0.

When I tail -f /var/log/messages it says PPP is respawning and the connection is failing to connect:


*plugs in modem*
ADI USB modem driver loaded with warnings
usb.agent says USB ACM driver not found

Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/0
Connection terminated
Redialling
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts1
Connection terminated
Redialling

It does this about 15 times then pppd kills itself (Exit.)

Is there another solution

Go here for the driver that works with the sagem e2t chipset http://lgsagem.free.fr click on the french flag you will see the driver listed at the bottom under linux L 2.0.30 IT WORKS UNDER REDHAT 9.

You say VPI is 38? 38 in hexa is 26, so I think that may be your problem as the modem is gettin the firwire loaded to it and syncing hence the ADSL light.The driver seems to be working so far or else there would be no ADSL light.

The format you put the usernale and password into the files is the other thing I can think of. You should TAB username TAB * TAB password TAB * then leave a blank line at the end of this line. The sagem helpfile explains.

So it should be this for tiscali uk in the adiusbadsl.conf file (think thats the name anyway)

Put it in the /etc/analog/adiusbadsl.conf and it connects just fine (according to tail -f /var/log/messages).

/etc/ppp/pap-secrets is fine, as is /etc/ppp/options et al.

I am seriously thinking about setting up a site on this issue as it is seriously annoying people - the difference between the 800 and the 800 E2T. hehhehe!!

Just wish I could get the eagle drivers going :P Am a linux newbie myself you see :P

will this work with mandrake 10
