everyday tips for new linux installationg

Hi

THis is sort of a proposal for a "sticky thread", I am looking for hints to use on linux when first installing the OS. Stuff like turning on 32 bit access with hdparm etc, If anybody knows of more helpful bits or hints or tips on how to just get Linux working as fast as it can be, making it more stable, general security issues thatneed to be disabled or enabled etc. Please.. I just want to know this stuff for the next box I have to do.
