ethernet problem with mint 8 and hp zv6000

I have done a completely fresh install of mint 8 into my hp zv6000 laptop. I cannot get the ethernet to work. Worked fine in XP so I'm sure it is not the ethernet port. Ethernet works fine on my alternate laptop, so I know it is working. My wireless bdm-4318 is not working either. Need to fix either one but would prefer to have ethernet connection. Please help me if you can.

New to this but have seen requests for lspci when askign these types of questions so here is is.

You need the Broadcom Driver. For Ubuntu, it's in the restricted repos. Not sure about Mint.

Here's the Broadcom page for Linux drivers (they released them only late last year).

Okay, I downloaded the: http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_s...0_82_38.tar.gz tar ball. My next ignorant question is: What do I do with it? I can extract it - but to where and to do what with it.

Sorry for the newbie questions. Too many years on MS - OS has evidently made me stupid...
