eth0: Promiscuous mode enabled????

My pc was attact and the whole system performance was so redused that I had to reboot it! At the shutdown proces the folowing string appeared at the closing line for eth0:
eth0: Promiscuous mode enabled
I never saw this message till now! Is my PC in danger??? and the shutdown proces was damn slow took about 5 minutes, normally it takes 15 sec.s

promiscuous mode means that the nic will pass in data not destined for your specific machine. this is used for things like packet sniffing and network troubleshooting and is not necessarily dangerous on desirable in the slightest. if you are connected to a switch then you will not see any extra data anyway, so is irrelevant.

I was attaced from 2 different IPīs with same method... I donīt understand why did my system slowed down so terribly It was only a portscanning (accourding to the Mandriva interactive firewall) and they where from a winbloxe xp sp2 machine from my LAN beacuse they have the same IP like mine only the last 2 numbers are different. I was attacked many times before but it never slowed down the system...
Was this a normal behavior?
P.S.@ acid_kewpie: your dvd ripping tool rocks, itīs wreally good!!!!
