Question eth0 is no longer active

I am using the Firestarter firewall and noticed that it was disabled today. When I attempted to restart it, I received a message stating that: "The device eth0 is not ready." I did not make any configuration changes prior to this and always used the firewall with eth0 selected.

After switching to eth1 in Firestarter everything worked normally.

Does anyone know how this switch from eth0 being the active internet device to eth1 being it could have occurred on its own?

Thanks

What distro are you using, and did you receive any program or system updates recently?
