Can someone please explain meaning of the above.

Each time a change in the configuration for any LVM volume group is made, the previous configuration is saved in the archive directory. A common default is to save the last 10 configurations for each VG. That data, plus the current configuration in the /etc/lvm/backup directory, can be extremely valuable if your LVM volumes become damaged or if you make a mistake and need to recover the old configuration (see the manpage for vgcfgrestore).

They are text files, and contain a helpful "description = ..." line near the top.
