establishing a internet connection

I have installed linux mandrake version into my computer which is part of a LAN successfully. However i am not able to connect to the internet. I have checked to see if my ip address, default gateway and server ip are right and they are. I am in the process of installing FTP and i need the internet connection to see if the installation already install FTP . Do you have any suggestion as to why my computer cannot access the internet?

how did you check to see that all the ip's are right? which command did you use? post the results of the command and tell more about the setup. are you using dhcp or static, getting intenet connection from where? are you sharing the connection etc.etc.
