Esound won't run under User account

I'm having trouble getting Esound to run under a user account. I've looked around and found this: delete /tmp/.esd and then run esd as the user account. I did this and it did what it was supposed to, change the ownership of the dir and socket file to the user account. Even after this esound still does not run. I type esd and it shows nothing. I have a gnome applet for esd and it says it can't connect, and that the service isn't running. It says to type esd at the prompt and try again, but nothing results from issuing the esd command. What should I do?

it might have to do with the permissions on esd - make sure esd (in /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin) has executable permissions for all users.
