EsounD fails to start in Gnome and console...

Hi,

When I start up Gnome I get the following error in my console window...

Audio device open for 44.1Khz, stereo, 16bit failed
Trying 44.1Khz, 8bit stereo.
...(numerous Khz, bits, mono/stereo attempts)
Audio device open for 8.192Khz, mono, 8bit failed
Trying 8Khz, 8bit mono.
Sound device inadequate for Esound. Fatal.

if I type esdplay <soundfile> I get the same error.
I have upgraded esound to version 0.2.35 but the same error keeps coming up.
I'm using slackware 10.0, My kernel is 2.4.26, I'm running Gnome 2.6 on X.org. My sound card uses the ess-18xx driver.

Here's the thing, if I use KDE as my window manager...sound works perfectly. I can play MP3s etc. But for some reason Gnome and this esound just aren't working.
I've searched the web but haven't found a solution to this problem. Someone suggested upgrading esound but I did that (to 0.2.35) and it still doesn't work.
Clearly my soundcard works if KDE can play sounds...
does anyone know how to get EsounD working?

Thanks for your help!
Vik

this may be the problem

http://www.tux.org/~ricdude/dbdocs/m...aneous108.html

something else to consider, EsounD is up to version 0.2.8 you can get it here

http://www.tux.org/~ricdude/download.html

and see if that fixes your problem.
good luck.
