Wink errors connecting to 1394 external hd... help!

For some reason this drive connects fine via 1394 to the HP notebook when running MS Win but will not under Ubuntu (Debian) Linux. I've tried my best and wonder if the following messages from dmesg give any clues?

Thanks for any suggestions

Jim
