Error while trying to run AIM 1.5

Hello, fairly new to Linux have a basic question:

I downloaded and extracted AIM 1.5 for Linux to my home folder
Trying to run it through the terminal by putting in the following command:

/home/alex/usr/bin/aim

Get the following message:

/home/alex/usr/bin/aim: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Also - this is another newbie question but I could not find an answer

How do I create desktop shortcuts to specific directories (i.e. documents, hard drive, etc). I can only seem to create them for applications. Thanks in advance for any help on these two subjects!

Alex

1. Why don't you just use Pidgin instead of AIM?
2. what desktop enviroment are you using

Using the default (GNOME I assume).

Will Pidgin allow me to msg AIM users as well as Pidgin users or only Pidgin users?

Pidgin is kind of like Trillian. it does almost any instant messaging protocol, meaning that yes, it does communicate with AIM clients.

I used aim 1.5 a while ago, honestly, its not worth a penny.

Hey thanks for the heads up about Pidgin, great program.

Could anybody still help me with creating directory shortcuts?

Directory shortcuts?

2 ways:

1. a .desktop file (at least that's what it is in KDE) - essentially a "windows" style shortcut. Contains metainfo etc.

2. a Symbolic Link - works outside of the desktop, programs see this link as if its a regular folder - its almost transparent.

What desktop environment are you using?
