I am not able to hear sound from speaker in ubuntu. So i went through steps given in

ln -sf /usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/include/sound /usr/include/sound; \
else \
rm -rf /usr/include/sound; \
install -d -m 755 -g root -o root /usr/include/sound; \
for f in include/sound/*.h; do \
install -m 644 -g root -o root $f /usr/include/sound; \
done \
fi
install: cannot stat `include/sound/*.h': No such file or directory
make: *** [install-headers] Error 1

From the error message, I think you do not have the kernel headers installed for your kernel.

To find out, open a konsole and first run the command 'uanme -a' ( without the quotes ). This will tell you the kernel you are running. You are looking for the numbers like 2.6.32-34 for example. Your numbers may be different. Once you know that, open up Synaptic Package manager. Search for Installed kernel. Highlight Installed in the left column, and type 'linux-headers' in the search field.

If the kernel headers package that matches the install and running kernel is installed, you have some other issue. If they are not installed, install them, and try the compile again.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

The kernel headers package were present. However i upgraded them to the latest ones available, rebooted the system and tried again. But still i am getting the same error.

Regards,
John

The kernel headers have to match the active running kernel, you do not want the 'latest ones' unless that is an exact match for the kernel. Nothing else will work.
