Seems some pb with gcc package. Can you once try and invoke:
Code:
~$ gcc -c txt.c
OR
~$ gcc -v -c txt.c

Command is only gcc -v -c txt.c, whereas ~$ is just terminal prompt.

Can you once check:
Code:
~$ gcc --version
And also what's there in txt.c file?

Rename your file and then try again, as:
Code:
~$ mv txt.c txt.cpp
~$ gcc -v -c txt.cpp
OR
~$ gcc -c txt.cpp
