I have searched the Internet and this forum but haven't seen anything like the problem I have. Like a lot of other people I wanted to try Linux (on a Win 7 machine). I used to use UNIX in college a long time ago so I installed Ubuntu this May.

Anyway, I decided I didn't want to try it anymore and searched the Internet for a way to get rid of it. In one forum it said that all you need to do was to delete the partition. Well, I didn't think more of it so that's what I did and I now get the error a lot of others have gotten.

If I could I would change the boot order but I can't do that (I have a Dell Studio 1747). I try F2 to enter the BIOS set up, but I still end up with that error and never get to the setup. F12 doesn't work either (F12 is for the boot order) so I can't boot from the DVD with the Win7 installation DVD as the computer just freezes and I can't get past the Dell splash screen.

I have tried to remove the coin battery on the motherboard in an attempt to reset the BIOS but that didn't work either.

So...

F2 = error
F12 = freeze
Reset bios by removing coin size battery = no change

Am I screwed? What is the problem?

I assume there is no use reformatting the HD by attaching it to another computer and re-install Win7. Is it a motherboard problem?

I would be eternally greatful for the slightest piece of advice at this point.

Your partition table has been erased, AFAIK.

Erasing the Linux partition doesn't erase the partition table.

@mag7417: With erasing the Linux partition you erased essential parts of the bootloader. But this is a software problem, has nothing to do with your hardware. Poking around in the BIOS or changing the boot order will not help, you simply should be able to start from your Windows CD, since the error definitely happens after the BIOS post and choice of bootdevice.
If you are able to boot from your Windows DVD, start the rescue console and run this command:This should also be possible if you connect the disk temporarily to a different computer.

Thanks guys! Only problem is that there is no way to interact with the computer. There is no way I can boot from the DVD. Is the best thing now to hook the HD up to another compute like you suggest Tobi? I guess that's not that complicated. Will it be hard to repair it once that has been done? That is... to locate the file that needs to be corrected and do it? Or would that be an operation requiring the Win7 installation DVD?

As stated above, you need the DVD. Attach the disk to a different computer (disconnect the drives in it to be safe), start from the DVD and launch the command mentioned above.
