I have some problem like that..
can't extract file .tgz in ubuntu

i use command tar -zxvf file.tgz
then i get error like this :
gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

any idea about that???

Please start your own threads in future, rather than dragging up threads that are several years old. Do not do this now, as I have reported your post for splitting into a separate thread.

What is the output of running the file command on your tarball? For example, if the file is called foo.tgz, you would run

$ file foo.tgz

No, I already told you not to make a new thread.

Edit: Again, please run "file" on your tarball and show us the output. Also, please write words out in full.

you are using ubuntu so i am guessing that you DO have a desktop manager( KDE or Gnome) installed and are using a GUI

why not just double click on the tarball and have the archive manager open it ( file roller or ark )
just like you would on any other operating system
windows,mac,linux

or use the right click context menu
r- click on the file ad select ark from the open with
just like on Microsoft or Apple
