Error Processing Drive during Scientific Linux installation

I downloaded Scientific Linux 6.4 from here: http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux....4/x86_64/iso/

I installed DVD1 on VBox 4.2.12 in Windows 7. I selected type "Other Linux", and allocating 512 MB RAM and 65 GB on the hard disk. My computer has 4GB RAM. The installation goes through, but I get this message immediately following the establishment of the time zone:
Quote:
Error processing drive:
pci-0000:00:01.1-scsi-0:0:0:0
66560MB
ATA VBOX HARD DISK
This device may need to be reinitialized.
REINITIALIZING WILL CAUSE ALL DATA TO BE LOST!
This action may also be applied to all other disks needing reinitialization.
Device details: pci-0000:00:01.1-scsi-0:0:0:0
Sometime in the installation, and before that error message, I see a message that says something about "not enough memory" flash on the screen for a split second.

When the installation of DVD1 finishes, instead of prompting me to insert DVD2, it offers to reboot. So I reboot VBox and eventually get a Linux command line prompting me for the "localhost login:" I set a password during the installation, but that was for administrative tasks. There is no step in the installation where I have the option to set a login to get into Scientific Linux.

The sha1sum for DVD1 matches. But the sha256sum does not match for either DVD1 or DVD2. Is that the cause of the problems? What can I do to get SL installed and working? Thanks!

You need to select "Redhat Enterprise linux 6", as scientific linux is a clone of RHEL.

To get graphical setup (anaconda) you need minimum 768 mb ram, else you will get text based installation. if you want gnome desktop (GUI), then choose 'Desktop' or if you want CLI mode choose 'Basic Server', and if you want to setup everything by yourself choose 'Minimum'.

Error is correct. You need to initialize disk space. just select 'Yes".

Not sure about error message. setting 768 mb ram may solve problem. try it and see.

You don't need 2nd dvd. it contains extra rpm files. by using rpm files in dvd1 and dvd2 together (Packages folder) you can setup local repository. one advantage of setting up local repository is, when installing 3rd party software, and if it need files that are dependency for that, then instead of downloading from internet it uses local repository.

Again, the problem is 512mb ram. set it to 768mb ram. you will get graphical setup. there you can configure everything.

Hope it helps.

Does it matter that the sha256sum does not match? From what is said onthis page about sha256sum, I'll try to reinstall it. If it doesn't work again, I'll re-download.

if you are going to run ISIS3 then if you have enough ram set it to at least 4 gig
from the VB install page i posted on a different forum
VB wants to max out at 50% or your ram
-- so set it to 2 Gig
with only 8 gig ram i run into some ram issues with that program on BIG data sets .

if it dose not match then it is possible that the whole dvd was not downloaded

if you used internet explorer and saved the 4.2 gig dvd to your "Windows Desktop "
there have been a lot of problems reported about files over 4 gig NOT fully saving

The BEST way to download a ISO dvd ( on windows ) is using "Bittorrent "

During the SL6 install
the VERY first screen has a option to check the install media
DO IT
you only need to do it once if it checks out , then for any reinstalls there is no need to recheck it .

If the SHA256 for SL 6.4 is correct on this webpage, http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux...6SUM.gpgsigned, then my download of DVD1 and DVD2 from this webpage, http://www.osst.co.uk/Download/scien..._64/iso/?id=28, from Vuze, did not go well. The SHA256SUM doesn't match for either DVD file. Using up dvd's is getting a bit frustrating, so I'm not enthusiastic about using two additional dvd's to try to install SL with these files.

I'll try other bittorrent sites like Kickass Torrents. But it seems like the osst.co.uk page (above) should be my best bet.

" SHA256SUM.gpgsigned " will need to be used with gpg

use the stranded "SHA1SUM" on windows
and use sha1sum.exe

http://mirror.centos.org/centos/dostools/
see section "3.2. Checking the md5sum (or sha1sum) under Windows/DOS"
http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/CD_burning_howto.html

but you used Vuze so there is NO NEED to check
the p2p torrent client Vuze
automatically checks the parts
they ALL have to be there if vuze said it was done
this is a very basic part of ALL torrent clients
if not EVERYTHING is there it is not finished and will not tell you it is done

if vuze finished then ALL the iso downloaded

--- if you are burning to a dvd then do this --

during the install after you burn it to dvd
on the very first menu is the option to check the dvd
-- do so --

it will ask you if you want to install
run the x86memcheck
and to check the disk

but this is a VM install so there is no real need for a dvd
have the vm mount the iso as a dvd
without the physical step of burning to a dvd there is also no need to run the test on the install menu
